Volumetrics like smoke, clouds, fog or atmospheres are critical elements because everyone can see them every day and knows, how they look like. Cheap, fast rendering volumetrics will always gives you a quick and dirty style.
Using realistic looking volumetrics will achief the visual impression you are looking for - but will damatically increase the complexity and rendering time of a scene and this will reflect in the costs.
